Windows 10 1803 Registry Backups Turned Off

Windows 10 has encountered numerous issues in the previous weeks, and partners have been aggravating the things. Now, a crucial new platform warning holds Windows accountable.

According to Ghacks, Microsoft has sent a warning to all its 800 million Windows 10 users that a significant and long-running bug in the platform is, in fact, not a bug. Instead, the issue has been induced by default. This is concerning on so many levels!

What Microsoft agrees it did was quietly turn off Registry backups in Windows 10 about eight months ago, in spite of deceiving users into thinking that the critical safeguarding system was still functioning. As Ghacks observed, Registry backup would notify ‘The operation completed successfully,’ even though no backup file has been created.

Backing up a registry is a major last wire of defense for many businesses and active users. If Windows System Restore would fail, obstructing the use of third-party software, the registry backup is all that remains. And yet, Microsoft has now explained what was, in fact, happening.

The company issued a statement in which it said that starting in Windows 10, version 1803, Windows will not automatically back up the system registry to the RegBack folder anymore. If one uses the WindowsSystem32configRegBack folder in Windows Explorer, one would still have every registry hived, but each file has a size of 0kb.

Windows 10 1803 was launched in October and, in spite of the problem being announced to Microsoft in its Feedback Hub service then, the company is only now coming out about what happened. Strangely enough, this comes just months after Microsoft promised to offer Windows 10 users more control, quality, and transparency.

The reason why Microsoft has done this? According to the company, to help reduce the overall disk footprint size of Windows. This is quite weird, as the registry backup doesn’t take more than 50 to 100 MB.
