Splatoon 2 Helps Nintendo Boost Sales

July has been a good month for video games developing companies. According to the NPD Group (video tracking firm), Nintendo has received a huge 19 % boost in sales and reached 588 million dollars.

Splatoon 2’s launch was a success

Nintendo has high sales in July of this year, especially thanks to the launching of Splantoon 2. Gamers spent over 277 million dollars on software and the most popular games were Nintendo’s Splantoon 2 and Activation’s Crash Bandicoot: N. Sane Trilogy.

The sales for Nintendo Switch and PS4 (Sony) grew 29 % compared to July 2016.

NPD presents the numbers

NPD, the company specialized in tracking the profits of gaming companies, showed the sales for July 2017. Mat Piscatella, an analyst at NPD said that total video game spending in July grew 19% compared to the same month last year. Total sales were 588 million dollars, hardware sales were of 182 million dollars console hardware sales were of 263 million dollars, accessories sales were of 129 million dollars and PC software sales were off 14 million dollars. Some digital sales are missing from the report, but it does present us a wider picture of last month’s sales.

Splantoon 2 was the winner

The report showed that Nintendo’s Splantoon 2 was the best selling game. The shooter is the sequel of Splantoon from 2015 and can be played online in up to 8 players: 4 against 4. Its release was on the 21st of July and the game also has a single player campaign (Hero Mode). The player has to defeat the Octarians and earn different weapons.

Popular sales items were also accessories for Nintendo Switch and Xbox One, especially gamepads. A decrease in sales compare to last year’s July was for Interactive Game Toys (IGT).
