Sony announces Xperia 5 II, a compact phone for photography and gaming

As expected, after the Xperia 1 II model, Sony also launched its compact version, the Xperia 5 II, keeping the pace of last year’s launches. The two devices are very similar in terms of capabilities and performance, but the major difference between them is in the screen. Instead of a huge display with 4K resolution, Xperia 5 II uses a smaller panel, on the same aspect ratio of 21: 9, but with Full HD resolution. Sony presents this model as one for photography and gaming, integrating for the first time on a mobile device of the Japanese manufacturer a 120 Hz panel.

The Xperia 5 II is smaller, but just as powerful
The Xperia 5 II seems to be the phone that most users who are looking for a compact and premium device might want. It has a 6.1 ”diagonal screen, benefits from a top chipset, Snapdragon 865 with 5G modem, has a fast screen that also integrates Motion Blur effect reduction technology, but also responds quickly to touch, with a 240 Hz touch panel. The rest of the configuration is complemented by 8 GB of RAM, as in the case of the Xperia 1 II, 4,000 mAh battery with fast charging at 18W, again, as in the case of the larger model and an identical camera system.

But what is missing from the camera system with three 12-megapixel sensors is a 3D TOF sensor. The Xperia 5 II also comes in a version with 128 GB of storage, in addition to the 256 GB version. Basically, Sony wrapped all the technology in the Xperia 1 II in a smaller body, put a better screen and kept even the headphone jack. Of course, the phone is water and dust resistant, but the wireless charging was lost on the way, unfortunately.

It is interesting that Sony continues to integrate top technologies in terms of photo and video capture on these models. For example, the Xperia 5 II comes with the Real-Time Eye AF system, which debuted on Sony Alpha cameras, which can focus at bursts of 20 frames per second precisely. Moreover, this is the first phone in the world that can shoot HDR video material in slow-motion at 4K resolution and 120 frames per second, which is a 5-fold slowdown from normal playback at 24 frames per second.

Even if the screen is no longer 4K, this model also has a “Creative” operating mode, which offers high color accuracy, being calibrated at the factory by CineAlta.
