Firefox Quantum vs. Google Chrome – Which One Is Faster?

Mozilla is working at some big changes for the Firefox browser. The new version will be named Firefox Quantum and it is already available in beta. It took more than a year to release the beta version, so it comes as no surprise that Mozilla managed to come with some impressive improvements. The browser will receive plenty of new features, but, most importantly, its speed and performance will be greatly enhanced.

Firefox might become faster than Chrome

Nick Nguyen, the vice president of Firefox product, made some big promises: “It’s going to be more exciting for the next year than any other browser. We rethought the architecture for how a browser should work.” And it appears that he was right. In a blog post he added that Firefox Quantum is twice as fast as the browser a year ago: “Firefox Quantum is often perceivably faster.”

Other new improvements

Other than its speed boost, Firefox Quantum will come with some important improvements. For example, website formatting will be faster thanks to the Quantum CSS aka Stylo, while performance bugs will be removed by Quantum Flow.

Firefox Quantum will get rid of its rounded tabs and a new page action menu will be added in the address bar. Mozilla will recommend sites you might be interested in and there will be a screenshot tool that generates a link, allowing you to share the image on Twitter, or email.

However, this new Firefox version can’t use older add-ons. All add-ons authors must retool their extensions if they want to be accepted by Mozilla. Right now, 4,500 extensions are available with the last version, and users will also see recommended add-ons. Overall, Firefox extensions will begin to look a bit like Google Chrome ones, but that is not a bad thing.
